The French residents dealing in the trading post called the area as “La Bey”, but the British fur traders called it “Green Bay” due to the water and the shore showed green color in the early spring. During the French and Indian War, the British gained control of Wisconsin by taking control of Green Bay in 1761. Charles de Langlade and his family originally came from Canada and moved to Green Bay in 1765 to become the first European-American settlers in today’s Wisconsin. The year was 1765 when the first permanent French settlers came to Green Bay.
